Programming for three sports at once
I direct baseball and men's basketball and assist with football at UTPB, and coach at D1 Training Midland. The lineage is Al Vermeil, Charlie Francis, and Derek Hansen: concurrent periodization, zone-based sprint work, and loading transitions planned as carefully as the phases themselves.
In the data
Applied sport science that coaches read
GPS load monitoring on STATSports Sonra and Catapult, force plates, velocity-based training, wellness check-ins, and DXA body composition. The output is always a report a head coach can act on before practice, not a spreadsheet.

Commercial platforms are built for bigger budgets and bigger staffs. I built UTPB's own: one database for GPS, force plate, wellness, strength testing, and body composition, with row-level security on every view. It now runs across the athletic department.

GPS load reporting for football and women's soccer
A pipeline from raw vendor CSVs to decision-first PDF reports for S&C staff and sport coaches: acute:chronic workload tracking, positional baselines, and year-over-year comparisons. For women's soccer, we combined GPS data with each player's anaerobic speed reserve to write individual running prescriptions for players who needed in-season top-ups. An audit also found three incompatible velocity band schemes running at once; I wrote the fix, with thresholds grounded in female team-sport physiology and a standing SOP.

Body composition research across teams
Preseason DXA scans analyzed across multiple collegiate teams toward publication, with limitations documented up front. The same scans feed two reports: full terminology and raw tables for staff, plain second-person language for athletes.

In-rack pencil holder. The two pegs seat in the uprights of a squat rack, so the pen for the lift sheet stays at the platform instead of walking off. Modeled in CAD, sliced, and printed in PLA.Hatfield handle. Clamps to the rack so a lifter can squat without loading the shoulder girdle. Three mounting holes set the height.

How I work
Measure early, estimate late. A new phase starts with real performance data, not carry-over numbers from a lift the athlete hasn't done in six weeks.
Thresholds fit the athletes in front of me. Division II benchmarks, drawn from literature that matches the population, not professional or FIFA standards.
Every report has an audience. Staff get the full terminology and the raw tables. Athletes get plain language about their own body.
Privacy is a design constraint. Athlete data is de-identified before it leaves the building, and FERPA shapes the architecture, not just the policy page.
